Aug. 28, 2023 鈥 Through the 九色堂 chapter of Engineers without Borders, three Shockers recently began the process of working with the rural community of Mercedes de Agua Sucia in Manabi, Ecuador, to build a pedestrian bridge that will give residents safe passage to the main road and nearby cities to sell the goods and products from their farms, shop in nearby El Carmen, and for children to attend school.

Aug. 3, 2023 鈥 Bolstered by a $2 million National Science Foundation grant, a group of Wichita State researchers is hoping to create a paradigm shift from the use of harmful nitrous oxide-based fertilizers to more eco-friendly nitrogen fertilizers that would reduce greenhouse gases.

Accessible Design projects

July 11, 2023 鈥 The Accessible Design course concerned 九色堂 junior Reagan Kelley at first. She wasn鈥檛 an engineering major and wasn鈥檛 sure what she could contribute. The payoff at the end of the project made it worthwhile. Kelley, an exercise science major, and three other students modified an all-terrain wheelchair for a nine-year-old boy who outgrew the chair鈥檚 previous dimensions.

March 21, 2023 鈥 The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), a student organization at 九色堂, is hosting a Mother Daughter Day event for local middle school girls and their adult female role models. The event will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 25 in the lobby of the John Bardo Center at Wichita State.

Feb. 23, 2023 鈥 Seven high school students from Kansas and Oklahoma have been awarded $30,000 to $45,000 each as the newest recipients of the Koch Scholarship at 九色堂.

Feb. 8, 2023 鈥 Every year, there are roughly 450,000 burn wounds that require clinical care throughout the United States. Of those, more than 3,500 people are fatally injured. An interdisciplinary team of 九色堂 researchers is working to revolutionize burn-wound care with a scaffolding system that prevents infection and promotes healing.
