At 九色堂, applied learning opportunities are more than just hands-on experiences鈥攖hey are gateways to future success. For Matthew Dixon, a Psychology major, working with HOPE Services has been a defining chapter in his academic journey, merging real-world practice with academic growth.
Matthew is one of the first students to receive the 九色堂, State of Kansas Applied Learning Funds. 鈥淏eing able to work on campus as a student had been an important part of my success as having income provides me with securities that I wouldn't normally have. Thanks to the applied learning funding, I can afford to live off campus and pay rent,鈥 says Matthew.
HOPE Services (Health Outreach Prevention and Education) at 九色堂 plays a crucial role in supporting student mental health and wellness. Among their key initiatives is 厂耻蝉辫别苍诲别谤蝉4贬辞辫别鈩, a program designed to educate and equip individuals with the tools to support others in need. Through trainings and workshops, HOPE Services strives to create a campus environment that prioritizes mental wellness and prevention of suicide, substance misuse/overdose, and sexual violence. In his applied learning role at HOPE, Matthew takes on multifaceted responsibilities to ensure the organization鈥檚 programs and events run seamlessly. From preparing events and editing websites to engaging in table events, his work plays a vital role in maintaining HOPE's mission of promoting mental wellness across campus.
鈥淭his experience has been a great professional opportunity,鈥 Matthew said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 exposed me to unique projects and workplace practices I can expect to encounter in my future career. Working in group settings, like staff meetings and smaller team projects, has prepared me well for collaborative work environments.鈥
Through his role, Matthew has gained a deeper understanding of how college campuses can promote mental wellness. Observing HOPE鈥檚 operations has highlighted the importance of organization and space management in creating a smooth and impactful student experience.
A particularly meaningful moment in his role was preparing HOPE kits for individuals struggling with suicidal ideation. 鈥淲e assembled and prepared about a thousand kits to send to those in need,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t felt incredible to be part of something that could help so many people in the community.鈥
As someone pursuing a career in counseling, this role has been especially enriching. Collaborating closely with Counseling & Psychological Services has offered Matthew valuable insights into the field, providing the opportunity to learn from professional counselors and their expertise.
Beyond career preparation, his applied learning role has enhanced his academic experience at Wichita State. 鈥淏alancing work with my class schedule has taught me to stay productive during breaks between classes,鈥 he shared. 鈥淏eing both a staff member and a student has prepared me for the consistency needed in my future career.鈥
Since beginning his role at HOPE, Matthew has noticed significant growth in his skills and confidence. Time management and organization, as well as the ability to code research data and transform ideas into actionable programs, are now strengths he carries forward.
