What is the Honors Research requirement?
This requirement is about problem-solving, navigating ambiguity and complexity, and sharing your work with a broader audience. It is required for all Emory Lindquist Honor Scholar track students. There are two options listed as fulfilling this requirement: HNRS 485 and HNRS 486.
We鈥檝e learned from you about the many ways that students can successfully meet the Honors Research or Creative Activity Requirement, including:
- HNRS 485 鈥 Independent Research or Creative Activity has become increasingly popular. For this, you request to register for credit for
faculty-mentored research you are engaged in or plan to start. Visit for the steps you need to take to register.
- Or consider taking ID 300H Design Thinking Honors. We process this as an exception in DegreeWorks, but it鈥檚 automatic once you let
us know that you鈥檝e registered. No petition required. There are three sections available
in the fall semester!
- If you are looking for summer course, consider HNRS 406C Making Social Impact. This course also fulfills the research requirement.

What do I do if I鈥檓 not able to take an honors course this year?
- To maintain good standing in Honors, we ask you to keep a minimum overall GPA of 3.25 and complete at least 3 honors credits per Academic Year (Fall, Spring, Summer) or complete a 12-credit track. If you can鈥檛 take a course every year, email honors@wichita.edu and explain your plan to stay on track to complete requirements.
Can I request an exception to an Honors requirement?
- Yes, we encourage you to design your honors education to challenge you and work with your major or professional goals. Complete the online petitions for exceptions form to request an exception to an Honors requirement.
