News & Information

The Curious Case of Fletcher Hummingbird...

Fletcher and his band performing for the Earth Day celebration at Bethel College in Newton, Kansas By day and through the week, Fletcher is your typical college student managing the demands of a rigorous course load, employment, and healthy extracurricular activities.  He is an economics major in the Cohen Honors College, a skilled orator who competes regionally and nationally in debate competitions, and an employee of the campus Media Resources Center (MRC) where he serves a variety of roles including sound technician.  On the weekends however, Fletcher transforms from college student to rock star hip-hop performer.  As part of the hip-hop collective 鈥淣o Service鈥, Fletcher and his band leverage a unique combination of intellectual wit, language mastery, and meaningful themes to evoke a musical experience that caters to the full gambit of human emotion.  In doing so, No Service expresses human reflection through an innovative and unique sound that embodies the essence of various legendary artists, from abstract ingenuity that mirrors A Tribe Called Quest, musicality that brings smiles to even the most diehard fans of The Roots, and a collaborative performance energy that even Wu-Tang aficionados could appreciate.  As one of many students who live, learn, and express themselves in a variety of beautiful means and manners, Fletcher is a living example that Honors is truly 鈥渕ore meaningful鈥 both in and out of the classroom.

Tilford Symposium

Headshot of Dr. Tilford in black and white The Tilford Symposium occurred April 25-26. Dr. Tilford championed inclusivity in education. He was the Graduate School dean in 1988 and Associate VP for Academic Affairs in 1994 at Wichita State. His work and advocacy expanded out of Wichita and reached the entire state of Kansas. To celebrate his legacy and achievements, the Tilford Symposium occurs every year with many faculty and staff of Wichita State being invited to speak on panels and encourage discussions of diversity and inclusivity in education.

Students are paired with community partners and engaged in interdisciplinary problem solving leveraging Design Thinking approaches is providing recommendations for real challenges provided by our partners.
